Geeksphone is a company that you might have never heard of, but it was among the first willing to give Firefox OS a shot – earlier this year, the small Spanish smartphone maker launched a couple of handsets running Mozilla's mobile operating system. And the guys are commuted to the emerging platform, it seems. They just announced some of the specs for their upcoming Geeksphone Revolution smartphone, which happens to be their most ambitious product yet.
The Geeksphone Revolution will run on an Intel Atom Z2560 dual-core processor with a burst frequency of 1.6GHz. That's the same chip powering the 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 tablet, by the way. The Revolution's IPS touchscreen will measure 4.7 inches in diagonal and will have a somewhat underwhelming, but passable resolution of 540 by 960 pixels. On the back of the handset will be located an 8MP camera with flash. The capacity of the phone's built-in storage isn't being mentioned, but expandable storage will be an option. A 2000mAh battery will be fitted into the device.
Now, we know that's probably not a specs sheet that's going to impress most of our frequent readers. The phone's stand-out feature, however, is a quite interesting one. The Geeksphone Revolution will be capable of running Google's Android or "a Mozilla technology based one" (read Firefox OS). Users will be allowed to switch between the two without that voiding their warranty. Unfortunately, we don't yet know how this switching feature will be implemented and how user-friendly it will be.
The Geeksphone Revolution is expected to become available in January of 2014. Pricing is to be announced at a later date.
